Tuesday we drove TN-441 up the Smoky
        Mountains to Newfound Gap where
Tennessee and North Carolina meet; the
fog was hanging low that day.
Then we drove down the mountain to
Cherokee, North Carolina and picked up the
Blue Ridge Parkway heading north toward
        Asheville .

On this leg we saw elk, deer, turkeys, along
with rain and dense fog--lots of dense fog
and many tunnels to drive through! We had
a nice lunch at the Mount Pisgah Inn &
Restaurant. Fog prevented us from driving
up to Mount Mitchell, the highest point in the
east. Things improved as the fog finally let
up and we over-nighted in Asheville.

Wednesday brought better weather and great
views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We were
doing fine until we passed Fancy Gap and ran
into road construction (tar and gravel) and one
lane traffic. It broke my heart to have to drive
across both fresh tar and gravel, the double
whammy, so I looked for another route to get to
        Roanoke, our next stopping point.
